Wenjun Yu and Elise van Nederveen Meerkerk have recently published their article “Textile Wages, Women’s Earning Power, and Household Living Standardsin the Yangtze Delta, 1756–c.1930” in a special issue on gender and wages of the international journal Investigaciones de Historia Económica. The article shows the important contributions of women’s textile wages during a period of economic transition, highlighting both the intrinsic and instrumental value of women’s work: for their own independence and the household economy.
