Sarah Carmichael is particularly interested in finding novel ways to measure cultural and institutional phenomena. Most of her research focuses on gender inequality and family organisation. Justice and fairness have always interested her. This source of inspiration has guided her choice of projects to work on as she works to understand the root causes of inequalities and what we can do to tackle them. She is co-author, together with Jan Luiten van Zanden and Tine De Moor, of Capital Women – The European Marriage Pattern, Female Empowerment and Economic Development in Western Europe 1300 -1800, published by Oxford University Press.
